Pastry Passions (Sovereign)

Description:

It Started with a young girl’s dreams…

When Safiya Burton was 11 years old and a student at Immaculate Conception High School in Kingston, Jamaica, she had two recurring dreams: the first was that she was married to Eddie Murphy whose profession was a pilot. The second was that she was in charge of the largest retail bakery in the world, with huge factories and 18-wheeler trucks, delivering her freshly baked goods all over the world.

Around the same time, although appreciative, she began to get frustrated with her meagre lunch allowance (around J$10 per week), as she could neither buy cooked lunches which the other students seemed to always be able to enjoy (she had to settle for her mother’s daily corned beef sandwich), nor treat herself to her weekly nail polish fix (a huge dilemma back then!)

She therefore decided to start baking on weekends. She would then sell from her book bag at lunch time. The line would stretch through the corridors and she had to be careful to not get caught by her teachers, as this was strictly forbidden at her all-girls Catholic high school.  It was this experience that ignited her passion for baking, along with inspiration from her mother and grandmother, who were also excellent bakers.

Then, a love story brought it to reality

Fast forward to the year 2006 when Safiya, though in a successful corporate career (which everyone said was the safest thing to do), she began to get frustrated yet again. She was an entrepreneur at heart. She wanted to take control of her destiny but just could not figure out how.

It was here that fate intervened.

She had only recently started dating Andre Chisholm. By the way, he was a commercial pilot. However, he didn’t look like Eddie Murphy. (Side story: Safiya was briefly married to someone who many remarked, upon introduction, was an Eddie Murphy look alike. Is that weird or what?)

On one of their first dates, she asked him what he wanted to do long term with his life.  Without knowing anything of Safiya’s dreams or goals, he said, “I’ve always wanted to open a bakery”. Coincidence? Not. Destiny? Absolutely, and that’s how Pastry Passions was conceptualized.

Open For Business

Pastry Passions opened its first retail bakery location at the Sovereign Centre in Kingston, Jamaica on January 11, 2007. It was definitely off to a rocky start, as there was no refrigeration, so they had to store their eggs in the pastry display cases in full view of the customers, along with the baked products for sale.

Pastry Passions has come a long way since then. We are happy to report that not only does Pastry Passions have refrigeration, but it also has established its strong reputation as the best retail bakery in Jamaica, some even say the world!

Our vision is to be the destination of choice globally for all birthday cakes and other baked products and desserts, while still creating the unique atmosphere of authentic, unpretentious, cozy neighborhood bakeries.

Our best sellers include the hummingbird cake, red velvet cake, black forest cake, rich chocolate cake, milkshakes and Bailey’s Irish Cream cheesecake.

“Is it excellent?”

All of our items are baked from scratch daily with only the best ingredients, the best baking methodology, the best trained pastry chefs, with painstaking attention to detail, and nothing less!

Our corporate philosophy is “Is it excellent?” This forms the basis for all of our decisions and menu offerings.

Pastry Passions currently operates two retail bakery outlets, as well as a centralized production facility. We employ approximately 30 individuals who have been trained to the highest standard.

We encourage all of those who interact with us to embrace the essence of joie de vivre, the joy of living, and indulge in our fine desserts!
