Water supply restrictions to begin Monday in Corporate Area amid drought

Water Restrictions to Begin

KINGSTON, Jamaica — July 19, 2025:
The National Water Commission (NWC) has announced the implementation of water supply restrictions for sections of Kingston and St Andrew, beginning Monday, July 21, 2025 for the Mona and Hope networks, and Wednesday, July 23, 2025 for the Constant Spring network.

This decisive action follows a steep decline in storage levels at the Mona Reservoir (46.3%) and Hermitage Dam (58.3%), due to the drought conditions gripping sections of the island.

In a statement, the NWC emphasized that its careful and proactive management had kept supplies consistent until now, but the ongoing drought has made stringent water supply management measures unavoidable. The utility is also working on short- and medium-term initiatives to build greater resilience into the water distribution system.

The current regulations are expected to continue until rainfall improves, anticipated around September or October during the peak of the rainy season.

The NWC is appealing for patience and cooperation, acknowledging that these restrictions will require adjustments to domestic routines and business operations. The agency also strongly encourages affected customers to store water outside of supply hours and practice conservation wherever possible.

Looking Ahead

This situation is a stark reminder of Jamaica’s vulnerability to climate variability and prolonged dry seasons. The NWC’s current measures aim to safeguard limited resources while ensuring as equitable a distribution as possible.

Residents and businesses alike must rise to the occasion by adapting their water usage habits, prioritizing conservation, and being prepared for possible adjustments as conditions evolve.

Key Recommendations for Customers:

  • Store adequate water during supply periods.

  • Practice water conservation at home and in business operations.

  • Stay informed of updates from the NWC.

As the island awaits much-needed rainfall, community cooperation and awareness will be critical to weathering this challenge responsibly.
