Dialysis is a medical treatment used to perform the function of the kidneys when they are no longer able to do so on their own. It helps remove waste, excess fluid, and toxins from the blood, as well as maintain the body’s balance of fluids and electrolytes. Dialysis is often used for people with kidney failure, also known as end-stage renal disease (ESRD).
There are two main types of dialysis:
Hemodialysis: In this method, blood is removed from the body, filtered through a machine called a dialyzer (or artificial kidney), and then returned to the body. It usually takes place in a hospital or dialysis center, but can also be done at home.
Peritoneal Dialysis: This type uses the lining of the abdomen (the peritoneum) as a filter. A special fluid is introduced into the abdominal cavity through a catheter, which absorbs waste and excess fluid from the blood. After a few hours, the fluid, now containing the waste products, is drained and replaced with fresh solution.
Dialysis can be a temporary solution for acute kidney failure or a long-term treatment for chronic kidney failure. It helps keep people alive while they wait for a kidney transplant or for their kidneys to recover, if possible.
