Ashanti Arthurs Martin is a Partner at Balderamos Arthurs LLP and has been practicing at the Belize Bar since 2004.
Ashanti obtained her Bachelors of Laws (LLB Hons) from the University of the West Indies in 2002, and in 2004 she received her Legal Education Certificate (LEC Merit) from the Norman Manley Law School. Ashanti graduated at the top of her class in 2004 and thus far, is the only Belizean to receive a Merit Certificate from the Norman Manley Law School. Ashanti is also a member of the Norman Manley Law School’s Principal Roll 2004 and is the recipient of several awards including the Council of Legal Education Prize for the most outstanding student over 2 years (2004) and the Council of Legal Education Prize for most outstanding first year student (2003).
While Ashanti has a general practice, she has a specific interest in asset recovery. Ashanti was the first attorney in Belize to invoke the jurisdiction of the Belize Supreme Court to grant Norwich Pharmacal Disclosure against the registered agent of an International Business Company. Since that first case in 2005, Ashanti has assisted many clients in combating multi-jurisdictional fraud by obtaining Norwich Pharmacal Disclosure from Registered Agents, officers of the corporations, and from the corporations themselves. Ashanti has also successfully procured freezing orders in aid of foreign proceedings and was a part of the team that assisted a client in securing Belize’s first ever appointment of a receiver in aid of foreign proceedings. Ashanti has also advised clients in having foreign judgments, foreign arbitral awards and foreign receivership orders recognized in Belize.
Ashanti has worked on several high profile cases including the challenge to the constitutionality of the compulsory acquisition of the telephone and electricity companies by the Government of Belize in 2009 and 2011 respectively, and the appeal against an anti-arbitration injunction which was recognized by the Global Arbitration Review as the Most Important Published Decision of 2013. Ashanti enjoys a general practice in Belize and as such can provide advice on most areas of the law.
Ashanti is the Secretary of the Belize Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and a director of St. John’s College Junior College.
