Reports have surfaced that China has embarked on a mass importation of donkeys globally especially from the African continent.
It is alleged that the gelatin produced from donkey hide is a key ingredient of one of China’s favorite traditional remedies, known as ejiao, used to treat a variety of ailments from colds to insomnia.
This has resulted in an export ban in some African countries after sales have risen in China.

Statistics indicate that the donkey population has been decreasing over the years following the rising power shifts towards advanced industry and away from traditional agriculture.
The population has plunged from 11 million to six million over the last 20 years.
Government officials are reporting that 80,000 animals had been sold in the year to date, compared with 27,000 in 2015, and warned that the donkey population would be wiped out if current trends continue.
